The Nijmegen 4Days Marches, officially known as the International Nijmegen Four-day Long-distance Marches, is the premier walking event in the Netherlands and worldwide. Annually, during the third week of July, approximately 45,000 to 47,000 walkers from over seventy countries participate. But how did this unique blend of sport and celebration originate?
Back in 1909 the Dutch Association for Physical Education (NBvLO) organised the first march as a form of military fitness training. This first edition had 306 participants, mostly soldiers. In the early years the location changed annually, but from 1925 onwards Nijmegen became the permanent home of the event.
From 1928 the 4Days Marches were also opened to international participants. After a break during World War II the event returned with a vengeance in 1946, supported by the people of Nijmegen. Participation steadily grew from a few thousand in the 1950s to over 40,000 in the 1990s. Today the number of participants is capped at around 45,000 per edition.
The event is not only known for the physical achievement but also for its festive atmosphere. Since 1970 the 4Days Festivities have been held simultaneously, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. This has made the 4Days Marches both a major cultural celebration and a top-tier sporting event.
Although conditions can sometimes be tough, such as the extreme heat in 2006 that led to the cancellation of the marches after the first day, it remains an event that unites people from all over the world. Walkers of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities come together in a shared achievement.
